Obituary for Maureen A. Tilley

Maureen A. Tilley, born in 1948 to Joe and Betty Molloy, died peacefully at home of pancreatic cancer on 3 April 2016. She was Professor of Early Christian History in the Department of Theology, Fordham University. She attended Holy Trinity grammar school and Mary Star of the Sea High School in San Pedro CA. She earned an A.B. (classical) from the University of San Francisco in 1970, an M.A. from St. Michael’s College (VT) in 1985, and a Ph.D. in the History of Christianity from Duke University in 1989. An internationally respected scholar of late ancient North African Christianity, she was known as a challenging, supportive and unfailingly fair teacher. Dr. Tilley taught at Florida State University (1989-1998), the University of Dayton (1998-2006), and Fordham (2006-2016). She wrote over 70 articles, over 50 reviews, a monograph, The Bible in Christian North Africa (1997; still in print), two books of translations, and co-edited a volume of essays. She served on the editorial boards of Theological Studies and Horizons. She was elected President of the North American Patristics Society (2005-06). She gave numerous academic and popular presentations on historical and theological topics. She was valued highly as a friend, mentor and advisor by colleagues and students. Maureen enjoyed opera. Her travel and embroidery research contributed significantly to her scholarship. She was active in religious education in her parishes. She published brief parish histories and guides to the iconography for St. Mary and Holy Family Churches in Dayton OH. Her many needlework projects included a large applique sanctuary hanging for Holy Cross Catholic Church (Durham NC). She is survived by husband Terry (Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., Professor of Catholic Theology, Fordham), daughters Elena DeStefano (Bob) and Christine Dyer (Josh), granddaughter Jacqueline Dyer, sisters Noelle Gervais and Josette Molloy, and many cousins, nieces, friends and colleagues who miss her dearly. St. Paul the Apostle Church in Manhattan hosts visitation, 11 April 2016, 4:30 - 8:00 p.m. and Funeral 12 April 2016, 10 a.m. Committal: Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma CA, 19 April 2016, 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donation to Mary’s Pence or a "peace and justice" charity is encouraged.
