Obituary for Martin Davis

As placed in the New York Times:

Davis, Martin, 81, passed away on August 5, 2017. He is survived by his extended family, including David Gaston, Jerome "Peewee" Thomas, and Adrianne Thomas; nieces Judith (Cliff) Binder, Karen (Tom) See, Linda (Robert) Barron, and Deborah Fogel; nephews Robert (Lisa) Fogel and David (Meade) Fogel; brother- in-law, Stanley Friedman; and other family and friends. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Suzanne Friedman and Joan Fogel. Born in Rochester in 1935, Marty graduated from Brighton High School in 1953 and Syracuse University in 1957. He spent his professional career with the New York State Unemployment Office after serving in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960. Marty's primary passion was giving to others by volunteering his time and energy. His proudest achievement was his mentorship of David, Peewee, and Adrianne arising out of his engagement with SCAN (Supportive Children's Advocacy Network) New York. Marty also spent many years volunteering in various capacities at New York Weill Cornell Center, for which he was recognized in 2001 with the Volunteer Achievement Award by United Hospital Fund. His quiet and selfless service extended to other organizations, including many overnight shifts with a suicide prevention hotline. Marty was unique in the extent of his commitment to others, setting an example for all of us to follow. Funeral services will occur in New York City on Friday, September 8th at 2:00pm at Redden Funeral Home (325 West 14th Street, NY, NY 10014). Donations may be made to SCAN-NY https://www.scanny.org/ ways-to-help/donate/ or Weill Cornell Medicine http://give.weill.cornell.edu/.
