Message: Laura and I met for lunch about two weeks before her passing. We talked about singing as usual. And of course she was again able to clarify several questions concerning my teaching and singing. In fact it was mostly Laura who was responsible for my becoming a professional singer in the first place. Before our working together I never knew what my instrument was capable of. After four years of studying with Laura, when I moved to Europe, it was her teaching and confidence in me that kept me going. Without her I probably would have given up singing. Every once in a while, I’d call from Europe, sometimes with questions about voice teaching. Most of the time I’d call to arrange a lesson, maybe lunch, or both when I visited New York. I’m trying to make sense out of all this, but my brain doesn’t seem capable of doing it. In my head Laura is still alive. John - I’m so sorry for the loss of your mother - my wonderful friend and mentor. I also hope she didn’t suffer too much. Be sure that my prayers and thoughts are with you during this tragic time.
