Obituary for Douglas Randall Drewry

Douglas Randall Drewry, beloved husband of Siobhan and loving father to Saoirse, their six-month-old daughter, died unexpectedly Friday 29 September at the age of 42 at home in New York City.

Doug was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 9, 1975, to Anthony and Linda Bek Drewry. He attended grade school in Hermosa Beach before studying at Woodberry Forest Academy in Virginia and graduating from Cushing Academy in Massachusetts in 1994. He earned a degree in public policy from the University of Southern California in 1998, after a semester abroad in Madrid, where he lived with a local family and developed his love for the Spanish language. At USC, he was a member of the basketball and volleyball teams.

Doug was well traveled and built a successful career as a strategic account executive at Fortune 500 companies Oracle, SAP, EDS, Vertica, Microsoft, and most recently, SAS.

On October 9, 2010, in San Diego, California, he married Siobhan Tennant, a speech pathologist from Hazlet, New Jersey. The couple built a life together in downtown San Diego before moving to New York in December 2016. On March 29, 2017, when Siobhan gave birth to Saoirse, Doug instantly became the happiest man on planet earth. No father has ever loved his daughter more than Doug loved Saoirse.

Doug was a devoted father, fanatical foodie, and avid skier, often making weekend trips with his family from San Diego to Mammoth Lakes. He loved pick-up basketball, live music, mornings at the gym, and was always in search of the perfect cup of coffee. A larger-than-life personality known for his wit and dry sense of humor, Doug was always deeply involved in family and community activities. He was the oldest of three siblings, a fiercely loyal and loving big brother, son, friend, and husband. Both courageous and sensitive, Doug built a life that was all about people. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

Doug is survived by his wife, Siobhan; his daughter, Saoirse; his father, Anthony, and stepmother, Michelle, of Henderson, Nevada; his sister, Katherine Peters, brother-in-law Thomas, nieces Ellie and Charlotte, and nephew Tommy, of Seattle; his brother Michael, of San Diego; his step-brother Alex Rico, of Fairfax, Virginia; his step-brother Nick Rico and step-sister Natalie Rico, both of Pasadena, California; his in-laws David and Aileen Tennant, of Hazlet, New Jersey; his brother-in-law Andrew, sister-in-law Mary, and nephew Breac Tennant of Hamden, Connecticut; and his brother-in-law Brendan Tennant, sister-in-law Susan Murray, and nephew Declan Tennant of Springfield, New Jersey. Doug was predeceased by his mother Linda.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 pm to 9 pm on Thursday 5 October at Redden Funeral Home, 325 West 14th Street, New York, N.Y. A funeral mass will be held at 10 am Friday 6 October at the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer, 869 Lexington Avenue, New York, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saoirse Drewry scholarship fund.
