Obituary for Katharine Alexandra Pettijohn

Katharine A. Pettijohn

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Katharine Alexandra Pettijohn (1990-2018), cherished daughter, beloved friend, gifted writer, talented actress, patient teacher, and devoted mom to her dog Harvard. Katharine was the bright light in the lives of her many friends, family, and community.

Born and raised in New York and well-traveled throughout the world, Katharine’s accomplishments in her short 28 years were numerous. A student of the Convent of the Sacred Heart and graduate of Marymount Manhattan College in economics, Katharine never stopped chasing her endless sense of wonder and curiosity for the world around her. Katharine’s innate passion and fire in her soul were contagious to all those who knew her. The International Society of Poets awarded Katharine the Outstanding Achievement in Poetry Award and her work was soon thereafter published in “Invoking the Muse: The International Library of Poetry” book. She was accepted into NYU’s prestigious Non-Fiction Writing Program where she workshopped her fearless and thought-provoking essays and book, which was accepted in the Sackett Street Writers Non-Fiction Workshop. Most recently, her last essay caught the attention of Teen Vogue and is soon to be published. As an actress, she was a member of SAG and was one of thirty actors accepted into Larry Moss' Fall Workshop in New York City. She also received training at several acclaimed acting studios in Los Angeles and Manhattan, where she honed her craft and further developed her artistic skills. Katharine’s extensive theatre credits included principle roles in productions at Studio 4, Theater for the New City, and the Times Square Theater. Katharine also had numerous film credits to her name, including playing the lead roles in Director Oday Rasheed's project, “Contact” and in Director Carrie King’s production of “Shell of a Woman.” Her impressive achievements throughout her life not only highlight what an extraordinarily talented woman Katharine was, but her legacy will create a lasting impact of social change for the better good of everyone.

She leaves behind her mother Christie Pettijohn, many extended family members, a large group of close friends, and her beloved dog Harvard.

A service in remembrance of Katharine will be held on Saturday, November 10th at 11AM at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 W Stevens Avenue in Hawthorne, NY 10532. Please drive to the main office to be directed to the Hanlon Plot, Section 25, Plot 57. Call (914) 769-3672 for more information.
