Obituary for Margaret C. Lescher

Margaret Cantwell Lescher, 58, of the Bronx, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2021 with her family by her side.

Margaret was born to the late Mary Cantwell and Robert Lescher on July 16, 1962, in Manhattan. She treasured the memories of her upbringing in the West Village and her time at Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn, NY. She went on to obtain a BA in Psychology and English from Amherst College in 1984, and a Master of Social Work from Columbia University School of Social Work in 1986.

She married Jonathan Samuels in 1991, and they lived together in Brooklyn for eight years before moving to the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Margaret is survived by her husband, Jon, her daughter, Anna, sisters Katie and Susannah, and many beloved friends and colleagues. Margaret was predeceased by her mother in 2000, and her father in 2012.

Margaret truly embodied the values of social work, and treated everyone she met with kindness and generosity. She spent over thirty years at the Montefiore Hospital Child and Adolescent Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic where she served children and families, before transitioning to private practice in 2020. Margaret valued her work, and continued meeting with clients even as her health declined. She was immensely proud of her daughter and the light of her life, Anna, who is pursuing her own Master of Social Work, as inspired by her mom.

Margaret will be remembered for her warmth and compassion, but especially for her sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Services are to be held at Redden Funeral Home on Sunday, July 25 at 11am.
