Mark Horton Obituary
Mark Horton, March 6, 1959 - June 3, 2026
"Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your Lord.” Matthew 25:23
Mark Horton entered into the presence of his Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, on June 3, 2026. While his death was unexpected to those who loved him, it was not unexpected to the God who ordained all his days before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:16).
Born in 1959 in Clinton, Miss. to Joyce Matthews Horton and Frank Collins Horton, Mark was the youngest of six children. He was reared on and deeply grounded in the principles of Reformed theology, the tenets of which shaped his worldview and echoed throughout his entire life. Upon graduation from Belhaven College in 1980, Mark carried his Southern culture and values to New York City, where he made his home for the last 40+ years.
Those who knew Mark witnessed a life rooted in grace and shaped by faith. He loved God's Word and treasured the rich truths of Christianity. Having memorized the Westminster Shorter Catechism as a child, he often reflected in later years on the blessing of being grounded in Scripture from his earliest memories.
Mark was known and loved for his joyful spirit, creative mind, quick wit, deep loyalty, and friendliness. He laughed big, and he loved even bigger. He blessed countless lives through his willingness to listen, learn, and encourage others. Mark served faithfully in his church, always seeking to point people to Jesus Christ through both word and example. He will be remembered as a deeply devoted friend.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Frank Horton, and his sister, Joyce Herring (the late Wayne). He is survived by his siblings, Beverly Biggs (the late Avery) of Madison, Miss., Bud Horton (Jennifer) of Brandon, Miss., Frosty Howell (Michael) of Montgomery, Al., Bob Horton (Leigh Anne) of Rainbow City, Al., 19 nieces and nephews, and 37 great-nieces and nephews.
Though our hearts ache in his absence, we grieve with hope knowing that Mark’s pilgrimage is complete and his faith has become sight.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Messiah’s Reformed Fellowship (www.merfnyc.org/give) or Reformed Theological Seminary (www.rts.edu/development/give).
