Kathleen Theresa Cuddihy Obituary

Kathleen Theresa (nee Morrison) Cuddihy passed away suddenly on July 29 at her home in Stuyvesant Town. She is pre-deceased by her parents Michael Morrison of Scotland, and Kate (Suarez) Morrison of Bronxville. Kathy is survived by her adoring husband of 59 years, Jim, her dear sister Martha (the late Ray) Ottinger, beloved brother-in-law, Kevin and her children Jim (Kristin), Kevin (Kathy), Tara (Mark) McFadden, Kate (Teak) Bassett and Megan (Chris) Byrne; and her grandchildren Madeline (Dean) Haire, Thomas Cuddihy, Kevin Cuddihy, Grace Cuddihy, Jack Cuddihy, Sean McFadden, Emmy McFadden, Matt McFadden, Mac Bassett, Skye Bassett, Fiona Byrne, Patrick Byrne; and her great grandchildren Tucker Cuddihy and Rowan Haire.

Born in Tuckahoe, NY, once she moved to the city she never turned back. At a young age, growing up on the west side, Kathy knew she wanted to be a nurse and proudly studied at St. Vincent’s Nursing School. Throughout her career in nursing she helped scores of children offering advice to their parents and listening calmly while putting their concerns to rest during her time at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, during her many years in private practice in Stuy Town and later working for the city of New York. She was a proud graduate of the High School of the Blessed Sacrament and Marymount Manhattan College.

She was lucky to meet the love of her life at a young age and was never without Jim by her side spending many summers of their early days of marriage in Rockaway Beach with cousins and family. They officially began their life together one Christmas Eve in the Xavier student chapel and have many fond memories of Xavier, its school and community. Together, Jim and Kathy were a model of devotion and loyalty to all who were blessed to call them friends. While Jim traveled the world with his bride, Kathy, there was no place that she loved more for its comfort and welcoming atmosphere than their apartment in Stuy Town where the door was always open to friends, neighbors and family at any hour of the day or night. Fueled by Pepsi and Marlboros, Kathy loved playing bridge with the girls and enjoyed their annual summer trips to the Hamptons to play cards for a week. She was a long-time member of the Merry-Go-Round book club and loved watching crime dramas long into the night. Kathy and Jim enjoyed cruises, Vegas and time in Atlantic City. They spent many years enjoying sports with their children; joyfully braving the weather at Con Edison field cheering on the kids in little league, and soccer and countless hours watching hockey at Playground 7 and later on the road in Inwood and beyond as well as basketball games at Epiphany School.

She left so many gifts by her example. Her most important legacy and greatest accomplishment was teaching her children the value of family and time together; she was grateful for all of her daughters and sons in law and was present at all of her grandchildren’s births. She ensured family time together was precious as they spent memorable summers in Hemlock Farms, many Christmas vacations together at Disney and summered for countless weeks in Silver Beach, New Jersey. Armed with her clipboard and index cards, Kathy had a schedule and a plan for every day none of which included going to the beach.

As her children followed her steady example and built their own families, they looked forward to their scheduled phone calls, and appreciated her support and non-judgmental guidance, advice and reassurance. Kathy was the ultimate care taker and was always available with quiet and thoughtful advice. She would listen but not interfere and loved her family without end. She will be missed by so many whose lives she touched.
