Fond memories come to mind upon learning of the passing of Lucy Ianniciello.
I was privileged to know the entire family … as they were neighbors who lived but two houses down from us on 46th Street in Astoria, New York.
To make it even more endearing … my sister, Louise and Pasquale Ianniciello married in July 1954 … enhancing my family with a handsome son, William and a beautiful daughter, Elizabeth, my nephew and niece.
I remember the gentleness of Mr. and Mrs. Ianniciello and equally so for Lucy. I especially remember Lucy, though with limited movement from her early childhood having to use a cane, patiently cared for us younger teenagers. Having been a little older and the only one with a car and license, Lucy would take Pat an’ Lou, and I, with another friend or two, to the beach. Once there, we would all go our separate ways … but Lucy, with her patience, would wait for all of us to gather for the return trip home.
I remember Mrs. Ianniciello describing how, like so many “Italian Mommas” would spend the day cooking particular meals for each of her children and Mr. Ianniciello. Mr. Ianniciello is remembered too as a hard working gentle man both at his job as a “sand hog” under the sidewalks of New York and as a home owner fixing and mending when home.
They are all gone now … and I am greatful to be left with beautiful fond memories of each and every one of them.
Rest in peace dear hearts and Thank You.
