Obituary for Marta Zorina

Marta Zorina
September 18, 1928-November 15, 2011

Marta Zorina, dancer, actress, choreographer, costume-maker and teacher, was
an extraordinary and multi-talented artist. Born and raised in Budapest,
Hungary, she graduated from the Hungarian State Dance Academy in 1955, and
later achieved certification to teach the Russian Vaganova ballet dance
technique. She was a classical and character dance soloist with the Budapest
Philharmonic Orchestra, and a ballet, character and folkloric dance soloist
at the State Theatre at Eger. She escaped Hungary at the start of the
Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and eventually found her way to the United
States after receiving a sponsor.

Here she taught dance at the International Dance Studio at Carnegie Hall, as
well as opening her own dance studio in NYC. She taught and performed
ballet, authentic Egyptian, Turkish, Ancient Greek, Arabic and Moorish Gypsy
dances, both here and abroad. She developed and taught her Geometric Yoga, a
yoga discipline connecting the lines of the body to geometric symmetry,
focusing on ancient Pharaonic postures. She was well known as a healer in
dance and athletic circles, drawing famous dancers and athletes to her
studio.

She is survived by a niece and a nephew in Hungary, and many loving friends
in the U.S.A.
